W czasie DWS Kriegsmarine nie posiadała udanych okrętów eskortowych. Przedwojenny projekt szybkiego eskortowca typu F (tzw. Flottenbegleiter) okazał się dość nieudany, wskutek m.in. niskiej dzielności morskiej. Doraźnie do celów eskortowych używano wszystkiego, co było pod ręką: torpedowców, niszczycieli, jednostek zdobycznych, różnych „drobnoustrojów” itd. Ale postanowiono też opracować nowy typ eskortowca, określonego jako Geleitboot 1941. Jednostki te były nakierowane głównie na ochronę przed wrogim lotnictwem (cała ich artyleria miała możliwość zwalczania celów powietrznych), a dodatkowo mogły przenosić 50 min oraz 4 wyrzutnie bomb głębinowych, bliżej niesprecyzowanego typu. Napęd miały zapewniać 3 silniki określane jako „Lentz expansion engines”, napędzające 3 śruby. Nie jestem pewien jakie to dokładnie były silniki, założyłem, że być może chodziło o jakiś rodzaj silnika wysokoprężnego (?).
Typ miał sobie liczyć 24 jednostki, które zamówiono (4 w stoczni w Hamburgu, pozostałe w stoczniach holenderskich). Pod koniec 1942 r. rozpoczęto budowę prototypu, ale w maju 1943 r. ją przerwano, a nieukończony okręt został zniszczony na pochylni podczas nalotu. Pod pozostałe jednostek nawet nie położono stępek, choć poczyniono pewne przygotowania dla kilku z nich. Zamówienia anulowano w 1942 i 1943 r.
