Ten okręt to chyba jeden z najjaskrawszych przykładów indolencji państwa tureckiego na przełomie XIX i XX w. Pancernik Abdul Kadir – bo o niego tu chodzi – został zamówiony w ramach planu rozbudowy floty z 1890 r. Miał to być umiarkowanej wielkości (by nie rzec – mały) predrednot uzbrojony w 4 działa 280 mm i 6 – 150 mm. W zasadzie nic nadzwyczajnego, ale do walki z greckimi pancernikami typu Hydra powinien się nadać. Projekt zyskał też moją sympatię, bowiem na ogół lubię okręty umiarkowanej wielkości, nie idące w jakąś gigantomanię. Stępkę pod pancernik położono w 1892 r. i… niewiele więcej się zdarzyło (oprócz finalnej katastrofy). Prace postępowały powoli, czasowo bywały wstrzymywane, a w międzyczasie projekt stał się totalnie przestarzały. W 1906 r. doszło do przesunięcia się bloków podtrzymujących kadłub, co skutkowało uszkodzeniem stępki. Wreszcie w 1909 r. nieukończony, uszkodzony kadłub został rozebrany. Gdyby jednak zapewnione było odpowiednie finansowanie i organizacja robót, to mógłby powstać całkiem sympatyczny okręt – pod warunkiem ukończenia go w sensownym czasie, czyli najpóźniej przed końcem stulecia.
Co do uzbrojenia – generalnie miało być niemieckiej proweniencji (działa 280, 150 i 88 mm), ale najlżejszą artylerię przeciw torpedowcom stanowić miały działka 37 mm, bliżej niesprecyzowanego typu. Założyłem, że będą to najpopularniejsze działka tego typu, czyli Hotchkissy. Opancerzenie miało być nieznanego mi pochodzenia, ale nienadzwyczajne grubości wskazują, że być może miał to być pancerz utwardzany metodą Harveya (wówczas nowość), względnie pancerz ze stali niklowej.
