Jest to okręt wyposażony w 2 moździerze, przeznaczone do niszczenia fortyfikacji nadbrzeżnych, stworzony na bazie predrednota typu Kaiser Friedrich III. Głównym orężem jednostki są 2 ciężkie moździerze Gamma kal. 420 mm. Oprócz faktycznie dokonanych na okręcie zmian przed jego wycofaniem z linii w 1916 r. (likwidacja 4 kazamatowych dział 150 mm, wymiana masztów „kolumnowych” na lżejsze, palowe), dokonano następujących zmian: zlikwidowano wieże dział kal. 240 mm, zlikwidowano nadbudówkę na której spoczywała dziobowa wieża wraz ze znajdującymi się w niej kazamatami, zamontowano w miejscu wież 2 moździerze, zlikwidowano 4 działka 88 mm (na śródokręciu i nad stanowiskiem dowodzenia) a pozostałe wymieniono na nowsze o długości lufy 45 kal., przystosowane do strzelania przeciwlotniczego. Zlikwidowano też wszystkie podwodne wyrzutnie torped, zupełnie nieprzydatne w nowej roli okrętu.
