Zanim pojawiły się drednoty, powstało wiele ciekawych projektów okrętów stanowiących ogniwo pośrednie, między drednotem i predrednotem. Jednym z nich był amerykański projekt z 1902 r., przewidujący okręt uzbrojony wyłącznie w ciężkie działa (chodzi tu o działa służące do walki z pancernikami), ale jeszcze nie monokalibrowy. Miałby on mieć 6 dział kal. 305 mm i 6 kal. 254 mm, rozmieszczonych w trójdziałowych wieżach. Oprócz tego, miał posiadać też artylerię przeciw torpedowcom w postaci dział kal. 127 mm L/60. Projekt nie przeszedł jak się wydaje wskutek trójdziałowych wież, co jest o tyle dziwne, że jak na US Navy nie byłaby to jakaś wielka ekstrawagancja – w końcu wcześniej nie wahali się oni ustawiać wieże jedna na drugiej...
