Japoński krążownik pancerny Chiyoda pierwotnie miał być zupełnie innym okrętem niż w rzeczywistości. Miał bowiem nieść 1 albo 2 działa Caneta kal. 320 mm i… tyle mniej więcej na ten temat wiadomo ;) Jest oczywistym, że w wariancie z 1 działem musiałby to być albo okręt w typie powiększonej kanonierki flatiron, albo okręt znacznie powiększony, a w wariancie z 2 działami – zdecydowanie powiększony, do rozmiarów przewyższających krążowniki typu Matsushima. Na warsztat wziąłem, jako bardziej obiecujący, wariant drugi. Mamy więc coś w rodzaju powiększonej (przedłużonej) Matsushimy, z działami na dziobie i rufie. Dzięki większym rozmiarom i wyporności można mieć nadzieję, że okręt będzie miał solidniejszą konstrukcję niż jednostki wspomnianego typu i nie będą go aż tak mocno trapić ich przypadłości (np. awarie wynikające z odrzutu dział nieproporcjonalnie silnych w stosunku do wielkości okrętów)
Okręt posiada ochronę w postaci pokładu pancernego grubości 50 mm ze skosami 80 mm (w odróżnieniu od wypukłego pokładu Matsushimy). Opancerzenie to wykonane zostało ze stali utwardzanej metodą Harveya. Ochronę kadłuba uzupełniały zasobnie węglowe oraz koferdamy z celulozą, która rozszerzając się pod wpływem wody ma za zadanie uszczelniać przecieki. Poza tym jednostkę wyposażono w sieci przeciwtorpedowe, rozwieszane na wytykach. Oprócz dział 320 mm, okręt wyposażono w szybkostrzelne działa systemu Armstronga kal. 120 mm, oraz 6-, 3- i 1-funtowe Hotchkissy przeciw torpedowcom. Wreszcie, okręt posiada 4 nawodne wyrzutnie torped kal. 356 mm.
