Kolejną jednostką w naszej flocie jest duży transportowiec
wojska. W trakcie niedawno zakończonej wojny jedną z głównych bolączek floty
była jej niezdolność do przerzucenia własnymi siłami naraz większej ilości
żołnierzy do kolonii. W 1904 r. flota dysponowała zaledwie jedną jednostką
zdolną do przewiezienia na dużą odległość większej liczby żołnierzy – był nią
transportowiec Polesie z 1890 r. o wyporności 6128 ton, który jednak był w
stanie przewieźć co najwyżej batalion wojska (800 żołnierzy). Trzeba było się
więc posiłkować wyczarterowanymi naprędce statkami cywilnymi, co trwało i było
kosztowne. Postanowiono się więc uniezależnić się od armatorów cywilnych,
dokonując zakupu na rynku wtórnym dużego statku pasażerskiego. Po adaptacji
(zmiana aranżacji wnętrz, dodanie lekkiego uzbrojenia) uzyskano transportowiec
zdolny do przewiezienia 1200 żołnierzy wraz z wyposażeniem (broń lekka,
amunicja, żywność), na odległość ponad 10.000 mil morskich. Zdaję sobie sprawę,
że to jeszcze w pełni nie zaspokaja naszych potrzeb, dlatego w najbliższych
latach można spodziewać się zakupu bądź zbudowania jeszcze co najmniej jednego
okrętu tego rodzaju.
