Spośród czterech budowanych krążowników liniowych typu
Borodino, najbardziej zaawansowana była budowa Izmaiła, którego zaawansowanie
na kwiecień 1917 r. oceniano na 66%. Nic dziwnego, że ten właśnie okręt był
rozważany przez dowództwo floty radzieckiej jako najbardziej nadający się do
ukończenia lub konwersji na jednostkę innej klasy. Między innymi, w 1925 r.
pojawiła się propozycja ukończenia go jako lotniskowca, uzbrojonego w 8 dział 180 mm (183 mm),
osiągającego prędkość 27 w. i mogącego zabierać około 50 samolotów. Pancerz
okrętu miał zostać zredukowany do 76
mm na burcie. 6 lipca 1925 r. projekt został
zatwierdzony przez Przewodniczącego Rady Komisarzy Ludowych (premiera),
jednakże w roku następnym, na skutek bliżej nie znanych mi manipulacji armii,
przeciwnej wydawaniu zbyt dużych w jej mniemaniu sum na Marynarkę Wojenną,
zamiar przebudowy Izmaiła na lotniskowiec anulowany. Ostatecznie jednostkę
złomowano w 1931 r. Gdyby do konwersji doszło, okręt mógłby wyglądać
następująco:
