Kolejne niemieckie okręty pancerne planowane do zbudowani po trójce „pancerników kieszonkowych”, jeszcze przed dojściem Hitlera do władzy, jawnie zrywały z postanowieniami traktatu wersalskiego. Jeden z projektów krążownika liniowego (schlachtkreuzer) z 1928 r. przewidywał lekko opancerzony okręt o wyporności normalnej 19200 ton (lekkiej 17500 ton), uzbrojony w 8 dział 305 mm (długości 50 kal., prawdopodobnie nowego wzoru opracowanego na podstawie pierwszowojennego), ale rozwijający aż 34 w. czyniło by go to najszybszym na świecie okrętem uzbrojonym w ciężkie działa, zdolnym do zniszczenia każdego krążownika ciężkiego i jednocześnie do ucieczki przed każdym silniejszym okrętem, nowo budowanych okrętów francuskich nie wyłączając.

Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
15 577 lbs / 7 066 Kg = 18,0 x 12,0 " / 305 mm shells or 2,2 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1,21
Metacentric height 5,3 ft / 1,6 m
Roll period: 15,0 seconds
Steadiness - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 35 %
- Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0,50
Seaboat quality (Average = 1.00): 0,48
Hull form characteristics:
Hull has rise forward of midbreak
Block coefficient: 0,470
Length to Beam Ratio: 8,44 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 26,25 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 57 %
Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 50
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): 4,00 degrees
Stern overhang: 5,48 ft / 1,67 m
Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length):
- Stem: 24,44 ft / 7,45 m
- Forecastle (18%): 20,44 ft / 6,23 m
- Mid (63%): 18,96 ft / 5,78 m (10,47 ft / 3,19 m aft of break)
- Quarterdeck (18%): 10,47 ft / 3,19 m
- Stern: 11,45 ft / 3,49 m
- Average freeboard: 16,77 ft / 5,11 m
Ship tends to be wet forward
Ship space, strength and comments:
Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 150,9%
- Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 133,8%
Waterplane Area: 36 503 Square feet or 3 391 Square metres
Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 96%
Structure weight / hull surface area: 165 lbs/sq ft or 807 Kg/sq metre

Scharnhorst (1934)
Gneisenau (1935)
Fajnie się prezentuje i jest nowocześnie uzbrojony. Choć sylwetka przypomina jeszcze pierwszowojennego "Hindenburga". Tragicznie słabe opancerzenie czyni okręt wrażliwym na ogień krążowników ciężkich. Skrajna przewaga w charakterystyce komponentów ofensywnych nad defensywnymi. Utrata atutu prędkości może postawić ten okręt w trudnym położeniu nawet w starciu z "odpasionym" krążownikiem ciężkim (np. w typie włoskiej "Zary").
