W połowie lat 60-tych nasz pierwszy okręt – żaglowy bryg
szkolny Gryf jest już jednostką wiekową, wyeksploatowaną (ćwierć wieku dla
czysto drewnianego i nieduże okrętu to zaawansowany wiek) i zdecydowanie wymaga
wymiany na nowy okręt. Postanowiłem go zastąpić niezbyt dużą korwetą
parowo-żaglową. Przewiduję, że nowa jednostka będzie w czasie pokoju być
okrętem szkolnym, a na wypadek wojny – może z powodzeniem pełnić funkcję okrętu
bojowego. Oczywiście, nie przewiduję walki z głównymi siłami wroga, ale do mniej
wymagających, drugorzędnych działań (np. zwalczanie żeglugi) nasza nowa korweta
nadała by się całkiem dobrze.
