Istniał
ponoć w czasie drugiej wojny światowej pomysł modyfikacji części
krążowników lekkich typu Cleveland, tak aby niosły 2 armaty12-calowe
(305 mm). Sens takiej przebudowy wydaje się wątpliwy, bowiem trudno
wskazać zadania, jakie można by postawić przed takimi jednostkami.
Zapewne dlatego projekt skończył się na etapie projektowania i żaden
taki okręt nie powstał. Być może było to jakieś echo koncepcji
krążownika zwiadowczego (scout)jaka była popularna w US Navy
bezpośrednio przed pierwszą wojną światową.Okręty te miały wykonywać
zadania rozpoznawcze na rzecz floty liniowej. W ramach tej koncepcji
rozważano okręty o uzbrojeniu głównym składającym się z2-4 armat 305,
356 lub nawet 406 mm, prędkości do 35 w. i wyporności rzędu10000-13000
ton (lub nawet większej). Być może jakąś pochodną tych rozważań był
pomysł uzbrojenia Clevelandów w 12-calówki?
