Oto
propozycja małego i taniego krążownika kolonialnego dla francuskiej MW. W
latach 1890-tych we Francji postulowano posiadanie 34 krążowników do
obrony kolonii. W tej liczbie mieściły się oczywiście różne stare
jednostki, jak pancerniki kazamatowe, krążowniki nieopancerzone i inne.
Te okręty mogły by być uzupełnione, a w dalszej perspektywie -
zastąpione, przez nowy typ małego krążownika, który dzięki niskiej cenie
mógłby być zbudowany w większej liczbie. Proponowany okręt mógłby
wyglądać następująco:
Aquilon, french cruiser laid down 1891 (Engine 1892)

1 520 t light; 1 584 t standard; 1 772 t normal; 1 923 t full load

Weight of broadside 156 lbs / 71 kg
Shells per gun, main battery: 300
1 - 14,0" / 356 mm submerged torpedo tubes

Bunker at max displacement = 339 tons (100% coal)
Complement:
136 - 177
Cost:
£0,183 million / $0,732 million
Distribution of weights at normal displacement:
Armament: 19 tons, 1,1%
Armour: 100 tons, 5,6%
- Belts: 0 tons, 0,0%
- Torpedo bulkhead: 0 tons, 0,0%
- Armament: 5 tons, 0,3%
- Armour Deck: 95 tons, 5,3%
- Conning Tower: 0 tons, 0,0%
Machinery: 811 tons, 45,7%
Hull, fittings & equipment: 590 tons, 33,3%
Fuel, ammunition & stores: 252 tons, 14,2%
Miscellaneous weights: 0 tons, 0,0%
Overall survivability and seakeeping ability:
Survivability (Non-critical penetrating hits needed to sink ship):
853 lbs / 387 Kg = 27,9 x 3,9 " / 100 mm shells or 0,3 torpedoes
Stability (Unstable if below 1.00): 1,41
Metacentric height 1,5 ft / 0,5 m
Roll period: 10,3 seconds
Steadiness - As gun platform (Average = 50 %): 100 %
- Recoil effect (Restricted arc if above 1.00): 0,35
Seaboat quality (Average = 1.00): 2,00
Hull form characteristics:
Hull has raised quarterdeck
Block coefficient: 0,539
Length to Beam Ratio: 9,39 : 1
'Natural speed' for length: 16,84 kts
Power going to wave formation at top speed: 49 %
Trim (Max stability = 0, Max steadiness = 100): 50
Bow angle (Positive = bow angles forward): 0,00 degrees
Stern overhang: 0,00 ft / 0,00 m
Freeboard (% = measuring location as a percentage of overall length):
- Stem: 17,39 ft / 5,30 m
- Forecastle (20%): 12,14 ft / 3,70 m
- Mid (50%): 12,14 ft / 3,70 m
- Quarterdeck (15%): 12,14 ft / 3,70 m (11,78 ft / 3,59 m before break)
- Stern: 13,12 ft / 4,00 m
- Average freeboard: 12,57 ft / 3,83 m
Ship tends to be wet forward
Ship space, strength and comments:
Space - Hull below water (magazines/engines, low = better): 162,7%
- Above water (accommodation/working, high = better): 99,7%
Waterplane Area: 5 910 Square feet or 549 Square metres
Displacement factor (Displacement / loading): 88%
Structure weight / hull surface area: 51 lbs/sq ft or 249 Kg/sq metre
Hull strength (Relative):
- Cross-sectional: 0,90
- Longitudinal: 2,63
- Overall: 1,00
Hull space for machinery, storage, compartmentation is cramped
Room for accommodation and workspaces is adequate
Ship has slow, easy roll, a good, steady gun platform
Excellent seaboat, comfortable, can fire her guns in the heaviest weather
